2017 Travel and Lodging Information
Participants of the RockOn workshop are required to attend the first day of the workshop to participate in the week-long workshop. Participants need to be on-site on June 17, 2017 at 9:30 AM and plan to leave the site on June 23, 2017. Although there are no activities planned on June 23, 2017, this is our backup launch date. In addition, there are activities planned until the evening on June 22, 2017. Please read the remaining items on this page before booking your airline tickets and hotel rooms.
AIR: The RockOn workshop will held at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility. There is no direct way to get to Wallops without a 1 to 3 hour drive. It is recommended to fly into Norfolk International Airport and drive 110 miles northeast to Wallops or one of the Washington, D.C area airports (Reagan, Dulles, Baltimore, Philiadephia). While these airports are farther away, there are usually more direct flights to them. You may also fly into Salisbury-Ocean City Wicomico Regional Airport, which is only 60 miles from Wallops Flight Facility but has limited flight availability. Please download directions below. All participants will need a rental car but participants can ride together.
HOTEL: The Wallops Flight Facility is very close to Chincoteague Island (a popular summer tourist location) and the Atlantic Ocean. That said, lodging will difficult to find. However, a block of rooms have been reserved for our group at the Refuge Inn. The rate is $130 per night plus tax ($14.30 per night). This rate is only for participants of this workshop. Please contact the Refuge Inn directly to make your reservations. Tell them you are with the RockOn Workshop. Your credit card will be charged a one night deposit at the time of your reservation. There is a one month cancellation requirement. The room block is limited. All rooms must be reserved by May 13, 2017 however rooms may sell out before that date. We recommend that you check in on June 16th and check out on June 23th. If you check out early during the workshop, they will still charge you for any remaining days on your reservation. This year, we were able to secure ~30 rooms at the Wallops dormitories. These rooms cost is $59 per night for faculty/graduate students/mentors/adults and $25 per night for undergraduate students. All rooms are single occupancy. If you are interested in staying at the door rooms, please contact Chris directly.
