2022 Travel and Lodging Information

The great thing about RockOn 2022, is there is no need to travel.  So keep those jammies on and enjoy RockOn from the comfort of your home.  Text below is for your reference when we all used to travel.  If we are allowed to have teams participate in the launch activities, details will be revealed here and via email.

Participants of the RockOn workshop are required to attend the first day of the workshop to participate in the week-long workshop.  Participants need to be on-site on August 3, 2020 at 8:00 AM and plan to leave the site on August 11, 2020.  Although there are no activities planned on August 11, 2020, this is our backup launch date.  In addition, there are activities planned through the evening on August 10, 2020.  Please read the remaining items on this page before booking your airline tickets and hotel rooms.  We recommend you change your accomodations to these new dates right away but please delay any airfare purchases until June 1st.

AIR: The RockOn workshop will held at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility.  There is no direct way to get to Wallops without a 1 to 4 hour drive.  It is recommended to fly into Norfolk International Airport and drive 110 miles northeast to Wallops or one of the Washington, D.C area airports (Reagan, Dulles, Baltimore, Philiadephia). While these airports are farther away, there are usually more direct flights to them.  You may also fly into Salisbury-Ocean City Wicomico Regional Airport, which is only 60 miles from Wallops Flight Facility but has limited flight availability.  Please download directions below.   All participants will need a car but participants can ride together.

HOTEL: The Wallops Flight Facility is very close to Chincoteague Island (a popular summer tourist location) and the Atlantic Ocean.  That said, lodging will difficult to find.  However, a block of rooms have been reserved for our group at the Refuge Inn.  The rate is $162 per night.  This rate is only for participants of this workshop.  Please contact the Refuge Inn directly to make your reservations.  Tell them you are with the RockOn Workshop.  Your credit card will be charged a one night deposit at the time of your reservation.  There is a one month cancellation requirement.   The room block is limited.  All rooms must be reserved by July 1, 2020 however rooms may sell out before that date.  We recommend that you check in on August 1st or 2nd and check out on August 11.  If you check out early during the workshop, they will still charge you for any remaining days on your reservation.  We were able to secure ~40 rooms at the on-site Wallops Lodging Facility.  These rooms cost is $59 per night for faculty/graduate students/mentors/adults and $25 per night for undergraduate students.  All rooms are single occupancy.  If you are interested in staying at the door rooms, please indicate this when you register and Chris will send you additional information.
